Pooghans!

The Pooghan is a cross between an Afghan Hound and a Poodle.

Pooghans are also know as Affydoodles and Affypoos.

The Afghan Hound is one of the most elegant dog breeds. They are sight hounds and are very loving. They carry themselves with grace and dignity.

We love this breed. The Afghan Hound can be difficult to find, which is why we are so happy that we can bring all of the good qualities of the breed with our Pooghan crossbreeds at an affordable price.

Our Pooghans are are featured for the breed in this Pet Guide article! All of the photos are our puppies. View Pet Guide Article to learn more about the breed and to see our dogs!

Oak Hill Farm Pooghans

Our Oak Hill Farm Pooghans come from the best of the best. Our pure-bred breeding dogs are all AKC Registered. Our parent Poodles, Afghan Hounds and Pooghans are all health-tested, and come from health-tested lines themselves. We test using OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) and PawPrints. The OFA testing is a series of x-rays that are taken by veterinarians and sent into the OFA for certification. We test for hips, elbows, eyes and patellas (kneecaps). The PawPrint testing is genetic testing that screens for common genetic defects in the breeds.

Why Pooghans?

The Pooghan crossbreed is truly a100% no-shed breed as neither of the parent breeds shed. Both the Poodle and the Afghan Hound have human-like hair (it feels like silk). We love their ability to be fun-loving and energetic in one moment, and then at the flip of a switch, to be a lap dog melting into your arms. We call them the rag-doll breed of dogs.

Pooghan Hybrid Vigor

One of the best reasons to breed Pooghans is to create a healthier puppy. Pure bred lines going back over time, will inevitably develop certain genetic anomolies that are passed down through the generations. Mixing breeds from entirely different genetic pools cancels out these anomolies in both breeds, making for stronger, healthier offspring. This concept is referred to as hybrid vigor.

Temperament

Pooghans are playful, happy dogs that are great with kids and good for first-time dog owners. Like most Doodles, the Pooghan is very social, and gets along well with people and other dogs. They are gentle, friendly and very family-oriented, and enjoy family life - a lot!

Generations

We breed F1 and F1B generations to ensure the highest amount of hybrid vigor while still being able to meet the smaller size demands of our customers.

The F1 generation is known as the First Generation. It is the cross of the two pure-breds, the Poodle and the Afghan Hound.

The F1B generation is known as a First Generation Crossback. It is the cross of a First Generation Pooghan with a Poodle. This allows for a smaller size dog.

Size

We breed both Mini Pooghans and Standard Pooghans. Our mini Pooghans are approximately 30 - 45 pounds, and our Standards are in the range of 50 - 65 pounds.

Grooming

The Pooghan coat is wavy to curly. Depending on how much brushing you want to do, you can keep your Pooghan in a longer or shorter coat. Grooming once every 8 weeks is usually sufficient. The standard Doodle grooming cut leaves the ears, face and tail longer, and trims the body shorter. If you keep the body trimmed, you will not have to brush them at all between groomings. If you like it longer, the coat will require daily or weekly brushing to avoid matting.

Lifespan

The lifespan of a Pooghan is typically in the 12 - 15 year range, perhaps a bit longer for the Minis.
